Tekstikäyttöliittymia, often abbreviated as TUI (Text User Interface), refers to a type of graphical user interface that uses characters and simple line-drawing elements to present information and interact with users. Unlike graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that rely on visual elements like icons, windows, and pointers, TUIs operate within a text-based environment, typically a command-line interpreter or terminal emulator.

The primary components of a TUI include text characters, cursor positioning, and control codes. Users interact with TUIs by typing commands and receiving textual output. Navigation and selection are often accomplished using keyboard shortcuts and arrow keys. Examples of common TUIs include the interfaces of early operating systems, many server administration tools, and some modern applications like `htop` for process monitoring or `nano` for text editing.

TUIs are known for their efficiency and low resource requirements. They can be run on systems with limited graphical capabilities or network bandwidth. Their simplicity also makes them easy to implement and maintain. Furthermore, TUIs are highly scriptable, allowing for automation of complex tasks. However, they can be less intuitive for novice users compared to GUIs, and their visual presentation is inherently limited. Despite the prevalence of GUIs, TUIs remain a valuable tool in computing, particularly in server environments and for users who prioritize speed and control.
