The category includes fibers, yarns, fabrics, and finished products manufactured from natural or synthetic fibers. Textiles serve numerous functions, including apparel, household goods, and technical applications.

Fibers form the base material and can be natural—such as cotton, wool, silk, and flax—or synthetic—such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, and elastane. Many textiles use blends to combine properties like strength, softness, or elasticity. Yarns are spun from fibers and then woven or knitted into fabrics; nonwoven fabrics are bonded or felled from fibers without weaving.

Fabric construction: woven fabrics result from interlacing warp and weft, with common weaves including plain, twill, and satin. Knitted fabrics are produced by loop interconnections and offer stretch. Nonwovens are used for medical, filtration, and industrial applications and are produced by bonding or felting fibers. Finishing processes such as dyeing, printing, and chemical treating add color and performance.

Uses and industry: textiles supply clothing, home textiles (bedding, upholstery), and specialized technical textiles for aerospace, automotive, and healthcare. The textile industry comprises fiber production, spinning, weaving/knitting, finishing, and distribution, with regional variations in scale and tradition.

Sustainability and care: textile production can be resource-intensive, prompting initiatives toward sustainable sourcing, recycling, and circular economy models. Consumers should follow care labels to extend fabric life, and washing generates microfibers that are a focus of environmental concern.
