Typical features include modular, microservice-inspired design; distributed control planes; redundant components and graceful degradation; and energy-aware scheduling and capacity planning based on telemetry and predictive analytics.

Origins and usage: The term emerged in Finnish technical discourse in the early 2020s as a descriptive category rather than a formal standard. It is used to contrast traditional, single-vendor, monolithic setups with more resilient, scalable, and efficient systems. International researchers may translate teholliset as “tehollistic” in glossaries, but no universal English equivalent exists.
