Technologyhighcompression is an interdisciplinary field and umbrella term for techniques and technologies aimed at achieving exceptionally high data compression across multiple data types, including multimedia, text, and 3D data. It focuses on reducing data size for storage and transmission while preserving perceptual or functional quality. The term combines traditional lossless and lossy coding methods with modern data-driven approaches and hardware acceleration.

Techniques at the heart of technologyhighcompression include conventional codecs that rely on entropy coding, transform coding, and predictive schemes, as well as advanced modern codecs such as HEVC and AV1. A distinguishing feature is the integration of neural and learned compression models that jointly optimize representation, entropy estimation, and distortion against bit rate. Perceptual optimization, progressive and scalable coding, and data deduplication also play roles, often complemented by hardware-specific acceleration to meet real-time or near-real-time requirements. End-to-end approaches that train compressors in conjunction with decoders and networking components are increasingly explored to improve overall system efficiency.

Applications span video streaming, cloud storage and archiving, edge and mobile computing, gaming, virtual and augmented reality, and scientific data management. These contexts demand lower bandwidth, reduced storage, and latency-aware solutions without compromising user experience or scientific fidelity.

Challenges include computational complexity, energy use, latency constraints, interoperability and standardization, licensing, and robust evaluation across modalities. Ongoing research aims to advance neural compression, optimize rate-distortion tradeoffs, and align compression methods with networking and caching infrastructures for broader adoption.
