Tavoitetaso

Tavoitetaso is a Finnish term meaning target level or target value used in planning, performance management and evaluation. The word is formed from tavoite (goal) and taso (level). In English contexts it is often translated as target level or benchmark. A tavoitetaso represents a numerically defined level that an organization aims to achieve within a specified period and serves as a reference point against which actual results are compared.

The concept is widely used in business, budgeting, project management, education and public administration. It is closely linked to performance management practices such as key performance indicators (KPI), objectives and key results (OKR) and service level agreements. Setting a tavoitetaso typically involves defining the metric, establishing a baseline, choosing a realistic time frame and assigning responsibility. It may also include considerations of risk, resources and external factors.

Examples include a revenue growth tavoitetaso of 5 percent per year, a production line target of 90 percent on-time delivery, or a school’s tavoitetaso of 95 percent student attendance. Progress is monitored regularly and the actual value is compared with the tavoitetaso; if necessary, the target can be adjusted or actions can be taken to improve performance.
