Tavastana

Tavastana is a fictional nation created for world-building and speculative fiction. It is a Nordic-inspired island federation located along a boreal coastline, characterized by rocky shores, deep fjords, and extensive forests. The capital is Nordhaven, and the country’s population concentrates in coastal cities and surrounding hinterlands.

Tavastana comprises a central mainland region and numerous islands connected by ferries and bridges. The climate is temperate-maritime with cool summers and snowy winters. Official language is Tavastian; Swedish and English are commonly used in business and administration. The population is about 3.2 million, with significant urban and rural communities.

Settlement began in the medieval period, evolving into a loose federation of counties. In the 20th century Tavastana adopted a modern constitution and established a parliamentary republic. The government consists of a President (head of state) and a Prime Minister (head of government), with a unicameral legislature of sixty seats. Elections are held every four years.

Tavastana has a diversified economy centered on sustainable forestry, fishing, shipbuilding, and services. Renewable energy, especially hydro and wind, forms a growing sector. The Tavastian krona (TK) is the currency. The state maintains a strong welfare system, high literacy, and a high degree of local autonomy for municipalities.

Tavastana emphasizes consensus and regional identity, reflected in festivals and regional cuisines such as smoked salmon and berry dishes. Transport relies on an extensive ferry network, rail links, and Nordhaven International Airport. The country is traversed by national parks and preserved coastal areas.
