Temperate maritime climate, also known as oceanic climate, is a classification of climate characterized by mild temperatures and a significant amount of rainfall distributed throughout the year. These climates are typically found on the western coasts of continents in the mid-latitudes, between approximately 40 and 60 degrees latitude. The proximity to large bodies of water, such as oceans, plays a crucial role in moderating temperature extremes. These large water masses have a high heat capacity, absorbing heat during the summer and releasing it during the winter, thus preventing drastic temperature fluctuations.

The defining features of a temperate maritime climate include cool summers and mild winters. Summers are generally not excessively hot, with average temperatures often ranging from 15 to 22 degrees Celsius (59 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit). Winters are typically mild, with average temperatures rarely dropping below freezing, usually between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius (32 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit). Frost and snow are infrequent and generally do not persist for long periods.

Precipitation in temperate maritime climates is abundant and spread relatively evenly across all seasons. Annual rainfall totals are often high, frequently exceeding 1000 millimeters (40 inches), and can sometimes reach over 2000 millimeters (80 inches). This consistent rainfall supports lush vegetation, such as temperate rainforests and grasslands. Cloud cover is common throughout the year, contributing to the humid conditions and the moderating effect on temperatures. Weather patterns are often influenced by prevailing westerly winds, which carry moist air from the ocean inland.
