Taustvalgusts refers to the lighting element that illuminates a display from behind. This is a crucial component in many modern electronic devices, particularly those with screens. The primary function of a backlight is to provide sufficient brightness to make the pixels visible to the viewer. Without a backlight, displays like LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screens would be transparent and unable to show an image.

Different types of backlighting technologies exist, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Early backlights often used Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs). While effective, CCFLs consumed more power and contained mercury, posing environmental concerns. The advent of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) revolutionized backlighting. LED backlights are more energy-efficient, offer a wider range of colors, are more durable, and can be made thinner, leading to sleeker device designs.

LED backlighting can be implemented in various configurations, such as edge-lit and direct-lit. Edge-lit designs place LEDs along the edges of the display panel, with light diffusers guiding the light across the screen. Direct-lit designs position LEDs directly behind the entire display area, allowing for more precise control over brightness and contrast, often resulting in superior picture quality, especially in high dynamic range (HDR) content.
