This phenomenon describes the rapid and excessive growth of algae in bodies of water, often lakes, rivers, or coastal areas. These blooms can be caused by various factors, most commonly an increase in nutrient levels, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, which are often introduced through agricultural runoff, sewage, or industrial discharge.
