Tandbedding

Tandbedding is a phenomenon where teeth appear to sink deeper into the gums. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including gum disease, aging, and aggressive tooth brushing. In cases of gum disease, inflammation and infection can lead to the destruction of the tissues and bone that support the teeth, causing them to recede. As the gums pull away, the tooth roots become exposed, making the teeth appear longer and creating the illusion of sinking.

Aging is another common contributor to tandbedding. Over time, the gums can naturally recede, and the bone supporting the teeth may also decrease. This natural process can lead to a more pronounced appearance of the teeth and their roots. Furthermore, brushing the teeth too hard or using a toothbrush with stiff bristles can damage the gum tissue. This mechanical trauma can cause the gums to recede, exposing more of the tooth.

The symptoms of tandbedding can include increased tooth sensitivity, the appearance of longer teeth, and sometimes a notched or indented area at the gum line. If left untreated, tandbedding can lead to more serious dental problems, such as tooth loss. Prevention and management often involve good oral hygiene practices, regular dental check-ups, and addressing the underlying causes, such as treating gum disease or modifying brushing techniques. In some instances, dental procedures may be recommended to restore gum tissue or bone.
