TPUFolien

TPUFolien are flexible films made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a class of polymers known for combining elasticity with toughness. They are produced by melt extrusion (and sometimes solution casting) from TPU pellets and can be cast or calendered into thin sheets that are then oriented or laminated. They can be transparent or colored and are available in a range of hardness (Shore A) to suit different applications. The films typically range from 10 to 200 micrometers in thickness.

TPU films are typically based on polyester or polyether segments. Polyester TPUs generally offer high tensile strength, good abrasion resistance and chemical resistance, but lower hydrolytic stability. Polyether TPUs offer excellent low-temperature flexibility and superior hydrolytic stability, with generally good wear resistance but sometimes lower heat resistance than polyester grades.

Processing and finishing options include cast film extrusion, coextrusion with barrier or protective layers, and lamination to other polymers such as PET, PVC, or paper. Surface finishes can be smooth or matte, and films may be coated for improved adhesion or metallized for optical effects.

Applications include protective and decorative components in automotive interiors, medical and hygiene products, electronics, textiles and fabric backings, protective coatings, and packaging.

As thermoplastic polymers, TPU films are recyclable in compatible streams, though local facilities vary; adhesive and printing compatibility should be considered in design.
