TDSmittarit

TDSmittarit, or TDS meters, are handheld devices used to estimate the concentration of total dissolved solids in water. They typically report the result as milligrams per liter (mg/L) or parts per million (ppm). The reading is an approximate indicator of all dissolved ions, including salts and minerals, rather than a measure of any specific substance.

How they work: TDSmittarit measure the electrical conductivity of a water sample. Since dissolved salts conduct electricity, higher conductivity generally corresponds to higher dissolved solids. The meter then converts the conductivity to a TDS value using a conversion factor. Temperature affects conductivity, so many meters include automatic temperature compensation. Because different dissolved substances conduct electricity to varying degrees, the TDS value is an estimate rather than a precise measurement of all constituents.

Calibration and maintenance: Calibrate the meter with manufacturer-provided standard solutions to ensure accuracy. Regular cleaning of the probe and proper storage according to the manual extend the life of the electrode. Replacements may be needed if readings drift or if the probe shows signs of wear.

Applications: TDSmittarit are widely used to assess drinking water quality, monitor hydroponic and agricultural systems, and check process water in food and beverage production. They are also used by aquarium and pool enthusiasts to monitor salinity and overall water quality.

Limitations and interpretation: A high or low TDS value does not identify which substances are present, nor does it indicate safety levels for all contaminants. Organic compounds, bacteria, or specific toxins may be undetected by TDS meters. For detailed analysis, other tests and certified laboratory results are required.
