Säirihaarniskat are a type of safety harness that are commonly used in various outdoor activities such as climbing, bouldering, and mountaineering. They provide a secure connection between a climber and a fixed anchor point, distributing the load across the body to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a fall. The design typically includes a waist belt, leg straps, and a chest or back bar, allowing the harness to fit snugly and remain stable during dynamic movements.

The harnesses are constructed from high-strength nylon or polyester webbing, with reinforced stitching or nylon cords at critical attachment points. Adjustable buckles, such as webbing fasteners or cam buckles, enable users to quickly set the straps to the recommended tension. In many models, a dedicated webbing chip or clip is attached to the harness in order to connect to climbing ropes or anchor systems. Some modern designs also incorporate shock-absorbing features, such as energy-absorbing rings or padded straps, to mitigate impact forces during a fall.

Säärihaarniskat are subject to international safety standards such as EN 12461 for climbing harnesses. Climbing organizations and technical education programs emphasize proper fitting, inspection, and maintenance, as well as the use of compatible connectors. While primarily associated with climbing and mountaineering, these harnesses are also employed in other outdoor sports where a secure anchoring system is required, including canyoning and abseiling.
