Särskiljande

Särskiljande is a Swedish term describing the quality or property of distinguishing or differentiating between two or more items, states, or categories. It is used across disciplines to refer to features, criteria, or cues that allow one to tell apart otherwise similar entities.

In linguistics, särkіljande drag, or distinguishing/contrastive features, are those phonetic or phonological traits that change meaning when they differ. A feature is considered särskiljande if swapping it for another value yields a different word or grammatical form. For example, in many languages the contrast between a voiced and a voiceless consonant, or between tones or vowel qualities, can be distinguishing. The term is closely related to, and sometimes used interchangeably with, distinktiva drag in Swedish, which also denotes contrastive features.

Beyond linguistics, the concept appears in fields such as taxonomy, medicine, and data analysis. There, särskiljande karaktärer (distinguishing characters) or särskiljande kriterier (distinguishing criteria) identify features that separate classes, species, conditions, or data groups. The emphasis is on usefulness for discrimination, classification, or diagnosis rather than on general similarity.
