Säieparallellisuus, also known as thread parallelism, is a concept in computer science that refers to the ability of a system to execute multiple threads concurrently. A thread is the smallest sequence of programmed instructions that can be managed independently by a scheduler. In a multithreaded program, multiple threads can exist within a single process, sharing the same memory space and resources. This allows for efficient execution of tasks that can be broken down into smaller, independent units.

The primary benefit of säieparallellisuus is improved performance. By dividing a program into multiple threads and executing them simultaneously on different processor cores, the overall execution time can be significantly reduced. This is particularly useful for applications that are computationally intensive or involve I/O operations. For example, in a web server, each incoming request can be handled by a separate thread, allowing the server to respond to multiple clients concurrently.

However, implementing säieparallellisuus also introduces challenges. One of the main concerns is race conditions, which occur when multiple threads access and modify shared data simultaneously, leading to unpredictable and erroneous results. Synchronization mechanisms, such as mutexes and semaphores, are used to prevent race conditions by ensuring that only one thread can access critical sections of code at a time. Deadlocks, where two or more threads are blocked indefinitely, waiting for each other to release resources, are another potential issue that requires careful design and management.
