Sähkövarastoint, also known as electrical energy storage, refers to technologies and methods used to store electrical energy for later use. This is crucial for managing the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, ensuring grid stability, and providing backup power. Various technologies exist, each with its own characteristics and applications.

One of the most common forms of sähkövarastoint is battery storage. Lithium-ion batteries are widely used due to their high energy density and efficiency, powering everything from electric vehicles to grid-scale storage systems. Other battery chemistries like lead-acid and flow batteries also play significant roles, particularly in specific industrial or niche applications.

Beyond batteries, mechanical energy storage methods are also employed. Pumped-storage hydroelectricity is a mature technology where water is pumped to a higher reservoir when electricity is abundant and released to generate power during peak demand. Compressed air energy storage (CAES) involves compressing air into underground caverns or tanks and releasing it to drive turbines. Flywheels store rotational kinetic energy, offering rapid charge and discharge capabilities suitable for short-term power stabilization.

Thermal energy storage captures heat or cold for later use, which can indirectly contribute to electrical grid management by storing excess renewable energy as heat or by reducing electricity demand for heating and cooling. Hydrogen storage is another emerging technology where electricity is used to produce hydrogen through electrolysis, which can then be stored and converted back into electricity via fuel cells or used as a clean fuel. The choice of sähkövarastoint technology depends on factors such as capacity requirements, duration of storage, efficiency, cost, and environmental considerations.
