Szikravágógyújtóvas is a Hungarian term that translates literally to "spark-cutting igniter iron." It refers to a specialized tool used for generating sparks, primarily for ignition purposes. Historically, such devices were crucial for starting fires in situations where conventional methods like matches or lighters were unavailable or impractical. The core mechanism of a szikravágógyújtóvas involves striking a hard ferrocerium rod or a similar pyrophoric material against a sharp-edged steel striker. This action shaves off tiny particles of the ferrocerium, which, upon contact with oxygen, ignite and produce a shower of hot sparks.

These sparks are then directed towards flammable tinder, such as dry grass, cotton, or specially prepared fire-starting materials.
