Systemklockor, often translated as system clocks or real-time clocks (RTCs), are essential electronic components found in most computing devices. Their primary function is to keep track of the current date and time, even when the main power supply to the device is turned off. This is achieved through a small, battery-powered circuit that continuously runs, maintaining timekeeping.

The data maintained by a system clock is crucial for a variety of operations. For instance, when a computer boots up, it reads the time from the system clock to synchronize its internal clock. This time stamp is then used for logging events, scheduling tasks, and ensuring the correct order of operations. Without a functional system clock, these activities would be impossible to manage accurately.

System clocks are typically integrated onto the motherboard of a computer or within the main chipset of a mobile device. The battery powering the RTC is usually a small, coin-cell battery. When this battery depletes, the system clock will lose its timekeeping ability when the device is powered down, requiring the user to manually reset the date and time upon the next startup. Modern operating systems often have mechanisms to synchronize their clocks with external time servers over the internet, mitigating the impact of a temporarily inaccurate system clock.
