Sveiset

Sveiset is a Norwegian term used to describe a joint or component that has been produced by welding, or an object that has undergone welding. Sveising, the process, involves joining materials—most commonly metals, but also some thermoplastics—by heating them to fusion, with or without the use of filler material, and sometimes under pressure. A sveis can be a butt, fillet, lap, or corner joint, among other configurations, and may be created by various welding methods.

Welding methods can be broadly divided into fusion welding and pressure welding. In fusion welding, heat causes the base materials to melt and fuse together, often with a filler metal to enhance strength. Common fusion methods include arc welding (electric arc between a workpiece and a welding electrode), gas welding (oxy-fuel burning of a flame to melt the metal), and TIG or MIG/MAG welding, which are specialized arc processes widely used in industry. In pressure welding, metals are joined primarily by applying pressure with or without heat.

Quality and properties of a sveis depend on factors such as material type, welding method, heat input, fit-up, and post-weld treatment. Defects can include porosity, cracking, lack of fusion, and distortion from residual stresses. Proper welding design, procedure specifications, and inspection are essential for reliable joints.

Applications range from construction, shipbuilding, and pipelines to automotive and aerospace manufacturing. Safety considerations include exposure to sparks, ultraviolet radiation, fume emissions, and the need for appropriate personal protective equipment and ventilation. Standards and qualification schemes (such as ISO/EN welding standards) guide practice and acceptance of welded joints.
