Suunenäsuojiksi

Suunenäsuojiksi is a Finnish term that translates to "mouth guards" or "mouth protectors" in English. This protective gear is primarily used in sports and other physical activities to prevent injuries to the teeth, gums, jaw, and other soft tissues of the mouth and face. They are typically made from thermoplastic materials that can be molded to fit the wearer's teeth and mouth.

The primary function of a suunenäsuojiksi is to absorb and distribute the force of an impact, reducing the risk of fractures, dislocations, and lacerations. They can protect against direct blows to the mouth, as well as indirect forces that may cause the jaw to snap shut. The effectiveness of a suunenäsuojiksi depends on its proper fit and the material it is made from.

Suunenäsuojiksi are commonly used in contact sports such as ice hockey, American football, boxing, martial arts, and lacrosse. They are also recommended for sports with a high risk of facial injury, even if they are not strictly contact sports, such as basketball, soccer, and skateboarding. In some cases, dental professionals may also recommend their use for individuals who grind their teeth (bruxism) during sleep, though these are often referred to as night guards.

There are generally three types of suunenäsuojiksi: stock, boil-and-bite, and custom-fitted. Stock mouth guards are pre-formed and inexpensive but offer a less secure fit. Boil-and-bite mouth guards are softened in hot water and then molded to the user's teeth. Custom-fitted mouth guards are made by a dentist and provide the best fit and protection, but are also the most expensive.
