Supervisors are frontline leaders responsible for directing the work of a group of employees. They serve as the link between staff and higher management, translating strategic goals into daily tasks, ensuring work is completed on schedule and to prescribed quality standards.

Common duties include assigning tasks, setting priorities, monitoring performance, providing feedback and coaching, conducting on-the-job training, and enforcing safety policies and company rules. They oversee resource use, address routine operational problems, handle minor personnel issues, and escalate more complex matters to managers. Supervisors may participate in performance evaluations and contribute to hiring decisions, though formal hiring often rests with human resources.

Titles vary by industry and organization, including shift supervisor, line supervisor, team leader, or foreman. Responsibilities shift with context: manufacturing emphasizes productivity and safety; services focus on customer experience and scheduling; healthcare on patient flow and compliance. The role may operate under union agreements or labor contracts in some settings.

Skills typical of supervisors include strong communication, interpersonal and conflict-resolution abilities, time management, problem-solving, and a solid understanding of the work processes. Educational requirements range from secondary education to bachelor's degrees, depending on sector and level of responsibility. In most organizations, the supervisor is the first level of management, reporting to a department manager and supervising a small to moderate team, with opportunities for advancement into mid-level management.
