Suojaverkko

Suojaverkko is a Finnish term for safety netting or protective netting used to prevent injuries or damage by catching or containing people, objects or debris. The concept is applied in environments where there is a risk of falling from heights or of loose materials entering surrounding areas, most commonly on construction sites, along scaffolding, around open edges and above work zones. It can also be used in industrial settings, warehouses and event venues to reduce risk from falling or flying objects.

Nets used as suojaverkko vary in type and construction. Common variants include debris nets, which catch falling materials, and fall-protection nets, designed to provide a secondary layer of safety for workers. Materials typically include high-strength synthetic fibers such as polyethylene or polypropylene, sometimes with reinforcement or metal components for added rigidity. Installation and maintenance are governed by safety regulations and manufacturer guidelines. Suojaverkko should be installed by trained personnel and securely fixed to structural anchors, with attention to proper tension and coverage to prevent gaps. Regular inspections are required to detect tears, fraying, UV damage or degradation, and damaged nets should be replaced promptly. Cleaning and storage practices help to extend service life, and netting should be chosen and maintained in accordance with applicable national and European standards and risk assessments.
