Suojavaattein

Suojavaattein, the Finnish term for protective clothing, refers to garments and ensembles designed to shield the wearer from hazards encountered in work and other environments. The concept covers clothing intended to prevent injury or illness by limiting exposure to chemical, thermal, mechanical, biological, or environmental hazards. Common forms include lab coats, coveralls, chemical resistant suits, aprons, gloves integrated with cuffs, high-visibility vests, and flame- or heat-resistant garments. Selection depends on the specific hazard and may combine different layers, such as a moisture barrier with a thermal liner.

Protections rely on materials and constructions chosen for the hazard. Chemical protection may involve barrier fabrics such as PVC or rubberized laminates; flame resistance can be achieved with inherently flame-resistant fibers like Nomex or treated cotton; breathability is often improved with microporous or laminated fabrics; insulation supports work in cold or hot environments.

In Europe and many other regions, protective clothing is governed by the PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and a range of EN standards. General requirements are covered by EN 420; performance standards address mechanical risks (EN 388), chemical risks (EN 374), cold and wet conditions (EN 343, EN 14605, EN 14404), visibility (EN 20471), and other hazard-specific standards. Clothing is typically CE marked to indicate conformity.

Care and use guidelines emphasize hazard assessment, proper sizing and fit, correct donning and doffing procedures, and regular inspection for wear and damage. Protective clothing is intended to supplement, not replace, engineering controls and administrative measures.
