Sunscorch

Sunscorch is a term used to describe severe damage to plants caused by excessive exposure to sunlight. This type of injury is particularly common in arid or semi-arid regions where sunlight intensity is high and water availability may be limited. When plants are subjected to intense solar radiation, especially during the hottest parts of the day, their tissues can overheat and suffer damage.

The symptoms of sunscorch can vary depending on the plant species and the severity of the exposure. Typically, affected areas will appear bleached, yellowed, or brown. In some cases, the tissue may become dry, brittle, and even develop a papery texture. Leaf margins are often the first to show signs of damage, followed by the entire leaf surface. Young, tender growth and new leaves are generally more susceptible to sunscorch than older, more mature foliage.

Factors that increase a plant's susceptibility to sunscorch include dehydration, nutrient deficiencies, and physical damage. Plants that are already stressed due to lack of water are less able to regulate their temperature and are therefore more vulnerable. Similarly, plants with damaged cuticles or thin cell walls may not have adequate protection against the sun's rays.

Preventing sunscorch involves providing adequate shade during the hottest periods of the day, especially for young or sensitive plants. Proper watering practices, ensuring plants are well-hydrated, can also help mitigate the risk. In some cases, applying reflective mulches or temporary shading structures can offer protection.
