Sulbung

Sulbung is a traditional Korean art form that involves the careful and precise cutting of wood to create intricate designs. The word "sul" refers to the act of cutting, while "bung" translates to wood, combining to describe the craft. Sulbung is often associated with the creation of decorative wooden panels, known as *sulpang*, which are used in traditional Korean architecture, furniture, and interior decoration.

The practice of sulbung dates back to the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392) and flourished during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), where it was highly valued for its aesthetic and symbolic significance. Skilled artisans, known as *sulbang*, would use specialized tools such as chisels, gouges, and mallets to carve detailed patterns into wooden surfaces. Common motifs include floral designs, geometric shapes, and symbolic elements like clouds, waves, and mythical creatures, each carrying cultural or philosophical meanings.

Sulbung is not merely a decorative art but also reflects the principles of Korean aesthetics, such as *jeongseon* (natural simplicity) and *yeoseong* (harmony with nature). The craft often incorporates techniques like *sulpang* (inlaid woodwork) and *sulgak* (wooden lattice screens), showcasing both technical skill and artistic sensitivity. Today, sulbung remains a cherished cultural heritage, with practitioners preserving traditional methods while adapting to contemporary design trends.

The art form is recognized as an important part of Korea’s intangible cultural heritage, and efforts have been made to pass it down through apprenticeships and educational programs.
