The Sulametalists are a society of magic-users who reside in a separate dimension from Hole, a grimy, urban environment populated by non-magic users. This society is characterized by a rigid hierarchy and a deep-seated disdain for "Dusters," the term they use for those without magic. Their society is known for its advanced understanding and application of magic, which they use for various purposes, including combat, manipulation, and the creation of magical artifacts.

A key aspect of the Sulametalists is their reliance on a specific substance known as "devil's mange" or "devil's dust," which is believed to be the source of their magical abilities. They often conduct experiments using this substance, sometimes on unsuspecting residents of Hole, leading to grotesque transformations and a significant threat to the lives of the Dusters. The central conflict of *Dorohedoro* revolves around the protagonist Caiman's quest to identify and defeat the sorcerer who cursed him, a pursuit that frequently pits him against various members of the Sulametalist society. Their motives are often self-serving, driven by a desire for power, control, and the elimination of those they consider inferior.
