Dusters

Dusters are tools and fabrics used to remove dust from surfaces. The term covers a range of implements, including feather dusters, microfiber or synthetic dusters, dusting mitts, and dusting cloths. In households, dusters are used to lift dust from furniture, electronics, and decorative items with soft, nonabrasive action.

Feather dusters use natural feathers, often ostrich or turkey, attached to a handle. They attract and hold dust through the barb tips, but can scatter particles on rough textures if pressed. Microfiber dusters consist of densely packed synthetic fibers with electrostatic properties that trap dust; they work well on flat surfaces and screens when used dry. Dusters with extendable handles reach high shelves, and dusting mitts or cloths can be used with or without sprays.

Usage and care: Use light, sweeping motions and avoid pressing hard. For electronics, use a dry microfiber cloth or a lightly damp one designed for screens; avoid ammonia-based sprays on sensitive finishes. Shake feather dusters outdoors to release captured dust. Launder microfiber cloths according to instructions; air dry; avoid fabric softeners, which can reduce absorbency. Store dusters in a dry place to prevent odor and mold.
