Grotesque is an umbrella term for forms that are bizarre, fantastical, and distorted. The word traces to Italian grottesco, meaning "of a grotto," first applied to Renaissance decorative painters whose frescoes featured imaginative creatures and dense, ornate motifs discovered in grotto-like rooms.

In visual art and architecture, grotesques are decorative sculptures and motifs—hybrids of human, animal, and inanimate forms—often used in friezes and wall ornament. They differ from gargoyles, which function as water spouts; grotesques are primarily ornamental.

In literature and criticism, the grotesque denotes a mode that blends the humorous and the monstrous, the comic and the terrifying. Since the 18th and 19th centuries, critics such as Bakhtin have explored how the grotesque embodies distortion and social inversion, often focusing on the body and corporeal excess as a means of challenging norms. In fiction, grotesque characters may provoke both empathy and disgust, highlighting tension between appearance and reality.

Today the term covers a broad range of art and media, including film, theater, and visual culture, where the grotesque can signal the uncanny, the surreal, or deliberately provocative ugliness. The concept remains contested, with some observers praising its imaginative richness and others treating it as a pejorative for the bizarre or revolting.
