Sugárzásbiztonság refers to the principles and practices employed to protect people and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. This field is crucial in various sectors, including nuclear power, medical imaging, industrial radiography, and research. The primary goal of radiation safety is to minimize radiation exposure to levels that are considered safe, taking into account both deterministic and stochastic effects of radiation. Deterministic effects, such as skin burns or cataracts, have a threshold dose below which they do not occur and their severity increases with dose. Stochastic effects, like cancer and genetic mutations, are assumed to have no safe threshold dose, and their probability of occurrence increases with dose.

Key principles in radiation safety include justification, optimization, and dose limitation. Justification dictates that any activity involving exposure to ionizing radiation must have a net benefit to individuals or society that outweighs the radiation detriment. Optimization, often referred to as ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable), means that radiation doses should be kept as low as is practicable, considering social and economic factors. Dose limitation sets maximum permissible doses for workers and the general public, which are legal limits that should not be exceeded.

Radiation safety management involves a combination of technical measures, such as shielding, distance, and time limitation, and administrative controls, including training, monitoring, and emergency preparedness. Radiation monitoring, both personal and environmental, is essential to assess exposure levels and ensure compliance with safety regulations. International organizations like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and national regulatory bodies play a significant role in setting standards and overseeing radiation safety practices worldwide.
