Suffixed

Suffixed is an adjective and verb form used to describe something that has had a suffix added. In morphology, to suffix means to attach a suffix to a word stem in order to derive a new word or to mark grammatical information. The word suffixed, as a past participle, indicates that the suffix has already been attached.

In linguistic analysis, suffixation is a common process of word formation and inflection. Derivational suffixes create new words and often change the word class, as in happy + ness = happiness or argue + er = arguer. Inflectional suffixes signal grammatical features such as tense, number, or mood: talk + ed = talked, cat + s = cats, or fast + est = fastest. Some suffixes are highly productive and can attach to many bases, while others are restricted to specific words or contexts. Allomorphy may occur, where suffixes appear with alternative pronunciations or spellings depending on phonological surroundings.

Suffixes are a defining feature of many languages. In English, a relatively small set of suffixes covers a wide range of inflectional and derivational needs. In other languages, especially agglutinative ones like Turkish or Finnish, long chains of suffixes attach to a single stem to encode tense, mood, voice, number, possession, and case, often yielding lengthy word forms.

In computing and data processing, a suffix refers to the trailing segment of a string. File extensions such as .txt or .jpg are suffixes. Programs may test for, extract, or remove suffixes to classify data, normalize inputs, or manage file handling.
