Stützmauer

Stützmauer is a German term that translates to retaining wall in English. A retaining wall is a structure designed to resist the lateral pressure of soil or other granular material. They are commonly used in landscaping and construction to create level changes in terrain, prevent soil erosion, and provide usable space on slopes.

There are several types of retaining walls, each with its own advantages and applications. Gravity retaining walls rely on their own mass and width to resist the pressure of the retained material. Cantilever retaining walls are constructed from a vertical stem and a base slab, forming a T-shape, which uses the weight of the soil on the base to create stability. Proper drainage behind the wall is crucial to prevent the buildup of water pressure, which can lead to failure. Materials commonly used for retaining walls include concrete, stone, timber, and gabions (wire cages filled with rocks). The choice of material often depends on aesthetic preferences, budget, and the specific engineering requirements of the project. Retaining walls are an essential element in managing landscape topography and ensuring the stability of excavations and embankments.
