Unlike consumer-grade loudspeakers that are often designed to enhance the listening experience with exaggerated bass or treble frequencies, studio monitors aim for accurate sound reproduction. This means they are intended to present the audio signal as faithfully as possible, without adding or subtracting sonic information.

The primary goal of a studio monitor is to provide a flat frequency response across the audible spectrum. This allows audio engineers to make critical decisions about the sound they are hearing, knowing that the speakers are not coloring the audio. This accuracy is crucial for tasks such as balancing levels, EQing, and making subtle adjustments that would be masked by less precise speakers.

Studio monitors come in various sizes and configurations, including nearfield, midfield, and farfield monitors, differing in their intended listening distances and power output. Nearfield monitors are the most common type, placed close to the listener and ideal for smaller control rooms. Active studio monitors contain built-in amplifiers, simplifying setup and often offering better integration between the speaker and amplifier. Passive monitors require external amplifiers.

Engineers often become accustomed to the sonic characteristics of their specific monitors, developing a reference point for how a mix will translate to other playback systems.
