Strukturbevaring, or structure preservation, is a conservation approach that focuses on maintaining the existing structural fabric and architectural form of a building, monument, or site. Its aim is to prevent deterioration and loss of historical value while retaining original materials and appearance whenever possible. It sits between preservation and restoration, prioritizing stabilization and ongoing maintenance over reconstruction.

Principles include minimal intervention, the use of compatible materials, respect for authentic fabric, and reversibility of invasive interventions when feasible. Decisions are guided by thorough documentation, condition assessment, and risk analysis, with a long-term stewardship perspective that prioritizes safety without compromising heritage values.

Practices commonly involve stabilizing unstable elements, consolidating weakened materials, repairing with compatible substitutes, improving drainage and moisture control, pest management, and climate control. When new work is necessary, it should be distinguishable yet compatible and, where possible, reversible. The objective is to extend the structure’s life while preserving its evidentiary and aesthetic qualities.

Guidance comes from professional charter bodies and heritage laws. International instruments such as the Venice Charter and the Burra Charter inform approaches to authenticity, integrity, and decision-making. National and local regulations govern listings, funding, public access, and safety standards, often in multidisciplinary collaboration among conservators, engineers, and historians.

Challenges include climate change, urban development pressure, aging materials, and limited access to traditional techniques.
