Stoepje

Stoepje is a Dutch word that translates to "little stoop" or "small step." It commonly refers to a small, raised platform or step at the entrance of a house or building. In the Netherlands, a stoepje is a characteristic feature of many older homes, particularly those in canal cities like Amsterdam. These steps are often made of stone or brick and serve a practical purpose, providing a transition from the street level to the interior of the building.

Beyond their functional aspect, stoepjes can also hold cultural significance. Historically, they were places where residents might sit to chat with neighbors, sell small goods, or simply enjoy the outdoors.
