Stillingsstatuser is a term used in human resources and Norwegian labor practice to describe the contractual status of a position or an employee’s employment relationship. The concept helps organize information about how a job is funded, how long it lasts, and what rights and obligations apply. Stillingsstatuser are used in recruitment, payroll, benefits administration, and compliance with labor laws.

Common stillingsstatuser include several main categories. Fast ansettelse (permanent) can be full-time (heltidsstilling) or part-time (deltidsstilling). Midlertidig ansettelse (temporary) covers fixed-term contracts, including vikariat (temporary replacement) and prosjektstilling (project-based). Engangsansettelse refers to temporary assignments for a short period or specific task. Prøvetidsansettelse (probationary period) is a temporary arrangement that applies at the start of a permanent hire to evaluate suitability; it typically has defined terms for evaluation and termination.

Stillingsstatuser are often linked to other employment details, such as stillingsprosent (the portion of full-time hours) and stillingsgrad (level of seniority or scope). The choice of status influences payroll, benefits, pension contributions, and entitlements such as notice periods and job security.

Legal and practical context is important. In Norway, Arbeidsmiljøloven (the Working Environment Act) and other regulations govern how temporary contracts, probationary periods, and permanent employment can be used, sometimes supplemented by collective agreements. Employers use stillingsstatuser in job postings and internal HR systems to clarify expectations for applicants and employees, and to manage transitions between statuses (for example from temporary to permanent).
