Stelvio

Stelvio is a name associated with several places in northern Italy, most notably the Passo dello Stelvio, a high mountain pass in the Ortler Alps, and the Stelvio National Park. The name is also used for the locality of Stilfs (Stelvio) near the pass.

Geographically, the pass connects the Valtellina valley in Lombardy with the Adige valley in South Tyrol. The summit reaches 2,758 meters above sea level, and the northern approach is renowned for its 48 hairpin bends, which make the route a popular challenge for motorists and cyclists.

The pass road dates to the early 19th century, developed under the Austro-Hungarian administration as part of an alpine transit network. Today it is typically open from late spring to autumn, weather permitting, and is closed in winter due to snow. The route is regularly used in recreational riding and professional cycling events, including the Giro d'Italia.

Stelvio National Park, established in 1935, is one of Italy's oldest national parks. The park spans parts of Lombardy and South Tyrol and encompasses portions of the Ortler Alps around the Stelvio Pass. It protects glaciers, forests, and alpine meadows and supports habitats for species such as ibex, chamois, red deer, and various birds of prey.

The nearby village of Stilfs (Stelvio) lies on the eastern flank of the park and provides access points for hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities. The Stelvio area is a major tourist and outdoor recreation destination, drawing visitors for scenic drives, cycling, hiking, and winter sports.
