Steinerkoulun

Steinerkoulun, also known as Rudolf Steiner School or Waldorf School, is an educational philosophy and pedagogical approach developed by the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. The first Steiner school was founded in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1919, and the movement has since spread globally, with thousands of schools operating worldwide. Steiner education emphasizes the holistic development of the child, aiming to educate the head, heart, and hands.

The curriculum is structured around the developmental stages of childhood, with a focus on imagination, creativity, and practical skills. In early childhood education, learning is primarily play-based, with a strong emphasis on storytelling, art, music, and nature. As children progress, the curriculum introduces academic subjects through artistic and experiential methods. For example, mathematics might be taught through geometry and music, and history through storytelling and drama.

A unique aspect of Steiner education is its emphasis on artistic activities, which are integrated into all subjects. This includes drawing, painting, modeling, music, eurythmy (a movement art), and handwork. The arts are seen as a vital tool for understanding and expressing oneself, as well as for learning academic material.

Another characteristic is the role of the class teacher, who typically stays with a class for several years, fostering a deep connection with the students and providing a consistent, nurturing environment. The school day often begins with a "main lesson" block, which focuses on a single subject for an extended period. Assessment is typically done through teacher observation and portfolio work rather than standardized tests. Steiner schools operate independently and are often funded through tuition fees.
