Startmeny

Startmeny, or start menu in English, is a user interface element found in many computer operating systems that provides centralized access to installed programs, documents, settings, and power options. It is designed to simplify launching applications and navigating to commonly used features from the desktop.

Origins and evolution: The Start Menu was introduced by Microsoft with Windows 95 in 1995, replacing the earlier Program Manager in Windows 3.x. It quickly became a defining feature of the Windows user experience, evolving through successive releases. Early versions presented a hierarchical list of programs; later versions added search, a right-hand pane for shortcuts or live tiles, and customization options.

Common features: A Start button or equivalent control opens the menu. It typically includes a searchable list of apps, a grid or list of pinned and recently used programs, quick access to documents and folders, shortcuts to settings and control panel, and power options for shut down or restart.

Versional variations: Windows 10 reintroduced a hybrid Start Menu with a left-side app list and a right-side area for pinned tiles and recommendations. Windows 11 simplified the design with a centered, streamlined menu that emphasizes pinned apps and a search box, removing the large live tile system. Other operating systems implement similar concepts under different names; Linux desktop environments often provide an Applications menu, while macOS uses an Apple menu and Dock instead of a traditional Start Menu.

Accessibility and usage: The Start Menu can be opened with a mouse click or a keyboard shortcut (for example, the Windows key). It supports searching, filtering, pinning frequently used programs, and customizing the layout to fit user preferences.
