Standesamtsregister

The Standesamtsregister, often translated as civil registration records, are official documents maintained by the Standesamt (civil registry office) in Germany and Austria. These registers document significant life events for individuals, primarily births, marriages, and deaths. They serve as the primary legal proof of these occurrences and are crucial for genealogical research, as well as for administrative purposes such as obtaining passports or other identity documents.

The practice of civil registration began in Germany in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, gradually replacing church records as the official means of documenting vital statistics. Each Standesamt maintains its own set of registers, typically organized chronologically by year. The content of a Standesamtsregister entry can vary depending on the period and the specific event. Birth registers usually include the child's name, date and place of birth, parents' names (including mother's maiden name), and sometimes their occupations and addresses. Marriage registers detail the names of the bride and groom, their parents, birthdates, places of birth, occupations, and the date and location of the marriage. Death registers record the deceased's name, date and place of death, age, and sometimes the cause of death and informant. Access to these records is generally restricted to individuals with a direct legal interest, such as close relatives, although historical registers may become publicly accessible after a certain period, often 30 to 100 years, depending on the type of record and specific legal regulations.
