Standesamt

Standesamt is the civil registry office at the municipal level in Germany and, in a similar form, in other German-speaking countries. It is the public authority responsible for recording civil status events and for performing legally binding civil ceremonies. Its core tasks include registering births, marriages, and deaths; maintaining the corresponding civil registers; and issuing official documents such as birth certificates (Geburtsurkunde), marriage certificates (Heiratsurkunde), and death certificates (Sterbeurkunde). The Standesamt also handles changes in civil status, including certain name changes and, where applicable, adoptions.

Civil weddings: In Germany and Austria, the Standesamt is the authority authorized to conduct a legally valid marriage. Religious or other ceremonies can follow but are not legally binding on their own. The office typically requires documents such as valid photo identification, birth certificates, and proof of any dissolution of previous marriages or the death of a former spouse.

Procedures and access: Applicants contact the Standesamt of their place of residence to request certificates or to arrange a civil wedding. Services may require appointments and fees. Certificates can often be ordered for mail or online where available; processing times vary by office and document type. Foreigners or those living abroad may need translations or, in some cases, apostille or legalization for use abroad.

Privacy and scope: Records held by Standesämter are official civil-status documents and access is controlled by law, typically permitting the person concerned or authorized representatives to obtain copies.
