Standboden

Standboden is a term used in packaging to describe the bottom section of stand-up pouches, commonly referred to in German as Standbodenbeutel. This bottom area provides the structure that allows the pouch to stand upright on shelves and counters, improving display and ease of use for consumers.

In design, the Standboden can be formed as a gusseted or flat bottom, depending on the product and production method. A gusseted bottom (Bodenfalz) expands as the pouch is filled, creating a stable base with a larger interior capacity. A flat or zero-bottom variant relies on specific construction to achieve upright stability. The Standboden is typically attached to side and front panels, and is sealed through heat or impulse sealing during manufacturing. The bottom may incorporate features such as resealability or create a reinforced area for handling.

Materials commonly used for Standboden are multi-layer films and laminates, often combining polyethylene, nylon, aluminum foil, and paper to provide barrier properties, heat resistance, and printability. Printing on the pouch surface is integrated into the manufacturing process for branding, nutrition information, and handling instructions. Stand-up pouches with Standboden are widely used for foods (coffee, snacks, cereals), pet food, powders, tea, and non-food items.

Advantages of Standboden packaging include upright display, efficient use of shelf space, and convenient portioning for consumers. Disadvantages can include higher material usage and recycling considerations due to multi-layer constructions. The term reflects a broader category of Stand-up packaging used across consumer goods and retail sectors.
