Staël Holstein was a Swedish-born composer and pianist who spent much of his career in France. Born Marie Elisabeth Vilhelmina von Holstein in Stockholm, she was the daughter of Adam Wilhelm, Count von Holstein. She displayed musical talent early on and studied piano with Albert Lindgren and composition with Ludvig Norman in Stockholm. In 1887, she married Baron Fredrik Staël von Holstein and moved to Paris.
