Spyrs

Spyrs are a fictional taxon used in speculative fiction and role-playing games to describe a small, agile forest-dwelling creature. There is no single canonical depiction; characteristics vary by author. Commonly, Spyrs are described as diminutive, about the size of a domestic cat or a large parakeet, with slender limbs and, in some depictions, membranous wings or gliding membranes that enable short aerial locomotion. Many portrayals feature bioluminescent markings that glow in low light.

They inhabit temperate and tropical forests, often dwelling in tree canopies and leaf litter, feeding on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates where available. Their behavior ranges from solitary foragers to highly social packets that organize into spirals—a term reflecting the root of their name. Spyrs use vocalizations and scent marks, and in some settings employ simple tools or cooperative hunting techniques.

Reproduction and life cycle likewise vary; some authors describe live birth with extended parental care, others describe egg-laying with communal broods. Lifespans and maturation rates depend on the narrative, but Spyrs are generally depicted as long-lived relative to their size.
