Sprengfragmenter

Sprengfragmenter are the metal fragments produced when an explosive device detonates. They are a central element of fragmentation munitions and are responsible for a large share of the injuries from such weapons. The fragments are typically shards of the device’s casing or preformed projectiles that are propelled outward at high velocity as the explosive energy is released.

Fragmentation is achieved by the design of the munition. Casing materials and construction determine the size, shape, and speed of fragments. Some weapons are designed to yield a broad spray of small, fast fragments, while others produce longer, heavier projectiles. In historical terms, fragmentation effects have often been differentiated from shrapnel, the latter term originally described a specific artillery projectile that released projectiles in flight; in contemporary usage fragmentation refers more generally to the fragments produced by the detonation itself.

The geographic distribution of fragments and their energies influence casualty patterns. Fragments can penetrate clothing and body tissues, causing penetrating wounds, lacerations, and blunt trauma. The danger zone extends beyond the visible blast area and depends on factors such as explosive power, range, and protective measures.

Historically, fragmentation effects have shaped the development of ordnance and protective equipment. Modern discussions around fragmentation munitions intersect with international humanitarian law and post-conflict safety, as unexploded fragments and remnants continue to pose risks long after a conflict ends.
