They set and adjust odds to reflect probability and balance risk; the aim is to attract balanced wagering on all outcomes. Common bet types include point spreads, moneyline bets, totals (over/under), futures, props, and parlays; live betting is often available during events.

Odds can be represented in several formats, including decimal, American (moneyline), and fractional. The format choice affects how winnings are calculated and is usually configurable by the user or operator.

Regulation and licensing: most jurisdictions require operators to obtain a license, comply with consumer protection, anti-money laundering, and age verification rules. Responsible gambling measures and data security are standard, with KYC checks and trusted payment methods.

Business model: sportsbooks earn revenue through a built-in margin, or vig, on each bet; risk management uses odds adjustments, bet limits, and hedging to keep the book balanced. Markets may include major sports, niche events, and futures.

Access and legality: legal status varies by country and region; some places allow regulated online betting, others allow only in-person wagering or prohibit it; some operators operate from licensed hubs but serve customers online.
