Spillgrafikk is the visual aspect of video games, encompassing the creation, rendering, and presentation of the game world, characters, user interface, and effects. It covers both 2D and 3D art, animation, lighting, shading, textures, particle systems, and post-processing to communicate style, mood, and gameplay information.

The spillgrafikk pipeline includes concept art and asset creation, 3D modelling and texturing, rigging and animation, material and shader authoring, lighting design, particle effects, and UI graphics. Real-time rendering in game engines (such as Unity or Unreal) combines rasterization, shading, and, where available, ray tracing or global illumination to produce frames within strict performance budgets. Asset management, level of detail, occlusion culling, and post-processing are used to balance visual quality with frame rate and memory usage.

Key techniques and components include physically based rendering (PBR) for consistent materials, texture maps such as albedo, normal, roughness, metallic, and ambient occlusion, as well as lighting models, shadows, reflections, bloom, depth of field, and anti-aliasing. The choice of art direction—whether realistic, stylized, or retro—determines material properties, color palettes, and typography, while cross-platform optimization influences resolution, performance, and input responsiveness.
