Spielleitung is the German term for the person who conducts and manages a role‑playing game session, equivalent to the English term “Game Master” or “Dungeon Master.” It originates from German tabletop gaming culture and is used across a variety of game systems such as Dungeons & Dragons, Fantasy Flight Games, and original German role‑playing formats like Das Schwarze Auge.

The primary responsibilities of a Spielleitung are to design the adventure narrative, establish the setting’s rules, and maintain the flow of play. This includes preparing plot hooks, creating non‑player character (NPC) personalities, and managing combat or skill challenges. While the Spielleitung controls the world’s mechanics, they are also tasked with fostering player agency, ensuring that participants have meaningful choices, and adapting the story in response to unexpected player actions.

Unlike a facilitator who merely enforces rules, the Spielleitung acts as a storyteller and referee simultaneously. They must balance maintaining narrative coherence with granting freedom to players, a skill that evolves with experience. Many Spielleitung also handle logistics such as session scheduling, resource acquisition, and sometimes communications with a publisher’s editorial team for licensed materials.

In German gaming communities, the role often includes advising newcomers, guiding them to understand system mechanics, and ensuring an inclusive environment. Some groups distinguish between a “Spielleiter” (story designer) and a “Spielleiter·in” (creative direction) for collaborative game design projects.
