Spezifitäts is a German term that translates to “specificity” in English. It refers to the quality of being specific, particular, or distinct. The concept is widely used across various scientific, technical, and linguistic disciplines to describe how precisely a phenomenon, entity, or process can be identified or characterized.

In biology, enzymatic specificity is a central notion. It describes the ability of an enzyme to select a particular substrate from many possibilities, binding via complementary active site structures. This distinction influences syntax, semantics, and discourse coherence.

Computing and software engineering also discuss specificity when evaluating software components or decision-making algorithms. Specificity metrics assess how sharply a classifier distinguishes between classes, often represented in confusion matrices as true negative rates. Moreover, the specificity principle in software architecture emphasises designing modules that focus on a single responsibility, thereby avoiding generality that can lead to inefficiency.
