Spetsiatsiooni

Spetsiatsiooni, or speciation in English, is the evolutionary process by which new species arise from existing populations. It involves long-term genetic divergence and the development of reproductive isolation, so that descendants become incapable of interbreeding with their ancestral populations under natural conditions.

Speciation occurs through several primary modes. Allopatric speciation happens when geographic barriers split a population, reducing gene flow and allowing separate evolutionary trajectories. Sympatric speciation occurs without geographic separation, often driven by ecological niche differentiation or chromosomal changes such as polyploidy in plants. Peripatric and parapatric speciation describe cases involving small peripheral populations or neighboring ranges with limited gene flow, respectively.

Divergence is driven by a combination of natural selection, genetic drift, mutation, and sometimes sexual selection. Reproductive isolation barriers prevent interbreeding and can be prezygotic, such as differences in mating timing, habitat, behavior, or mechanical compatibility, or postzygotic, such as hybrids with reduced viability or sterility.

Evidence for speciation comes from the fossil record, comparative genomics, and observations of ongoing divergence in natural populations. Classic examples include allopatric radiations like the finches of the Galápagos, rapid speciation among African cichlid fishes, and several plant lineages where polyploidy creates immediate reproductive isolation.

Spersiation is central to understanding biodiversity and evolutionary innovation. Rates of speciation vary, ranging from gradual accumulation of differences over long periods to rapid bursts following ecological opportunities or genetic changes, contributing to the diversity of life observed today.
