Spenningavhengighet

Spenningavhengighet, also known as thrill-seeking or sensation-seeking, is a personality trait characterized by a need for varied, novel, complex, and intense sensations and experiences, and the willingness to take risks for the sake of such experiences. Individuals high in spenningavhengighet often seek out exciting and stimulating activities, which can range from extreme sports and adventurous travel to risky behaviors like substance abuse or gambling.

This trait is not inherently negative, and many individuals with high spenningavhengighet lead fulfilling lives. However, the potential for negative consequences arises when the pursuit of stimulation leads to harmful or illegal activities. Research suggests that spenningavhengighet is influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is often linked to lower levels of monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) in the brain, an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.

The concept of spenningavhengighet was popularized by psychologist Marvin Zuckerman in the 1970s. He identified four sub-factors: thrill and adventure seeking, experience seeking, disinhibition, and boredom susceptibility. Understanding spenningavhengighet can be helpful in various fields, including psychology, criminology, and marketing, as it helps explain certain behavioral patterns and preferences. While the term is commonly used in Norwegian, the underlying concept of sensation-seeking is recognized globally in psychological research.
